The 14-year-old Fox already had earned a bronze in the 200m back and a silver in the 50m back-- breaking a club record with a time of 28.72 seconds-- but woke up the next morning and could not move his neck. After checking with a therapist, who determined that the condition wasn't serious, Fox was still in discomfort when he lined up for the 100m backstroke in the boys' 13-14 age group. Going up against defending national champion Markus Thormeyer of B.C., Fox led at the turn in a time of 29.79. Thormeyer surged ahead at the 75m mark, but Fox responded, finishing in 1:00.85, just one one-hundredth of a second behind Thormeyer. Fox's time was not only an HHBF best time for that age category, but it was also fourth best in the Ontario records and 11th amongst the best Canadian times. "It's hard to perform better than ever when you're in pain," said Blue Fins' head coach Mike Thompson. "Matt showed immense strength of character racing the way he did and it's indicative of what the Blue Fins do. Second place is nothing to be ashamed of, especially when it's the fourth fastest time in Ontario history." At the Senior Nationals in Calgary, Blue Fin Kyle Haas finished sixth in the 50m backstroke, breaking his own club record in a time of 27 seconds despite not being in top form due to injury. He was also 10th in the 100m back to win the B final and in the age group events, was fourth in the 50m back, sixth in the 100m back and eighth in the 200m back. Mitchell Krafczek set a season-best time in the 200m backstroke (2:22.38), equaled his PB in the 100m back and broke the 30-second mark in the 50m back for the first time.
