Photo submitted 11 ·The IFP· Halton Hills, Tuesday, August 28, 2012 Norval United Church team travels to Nicaragua to build homes and wastewater system Six members from Norval United Church traveled to Managua, Nicaragua for ten days of learning and service. The team, comprised of two adults and four students, lived with host families, learned about Nicaraguan culture and history, and visited with United Church global partners at Los Quinchos School (a school for street children) and the Moravian Church of Nicaragua. During their time there, the team worked alongside local trades-people to build two modest-sized homes and a waste water system in Bario Grenada, one of Managua's poorest neighbourhoods. The raised platform houses were most appreciated, especially when the rainy season descended in late May, washing out dirt floor houses in that neighbourhood. Since the revolution and counter-revolution of the 1980s, Nicaragua has remained mired in poverty and to this day is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, behind Haiti. The team from Norval United Church brings home many insights into what creates systemic poverty and what we can do as northerners to advocate for global justice. Patty and Maybelline are as happy and content in person as they appear in this photo. These attractive girls are tricolor beagles. Patty is a young six year old, weighing 40 lbs, while Maybelline is five and tips the scales at 38 lb. The walkers affectionately nickname the girls "our Teletubbies" because of their lovable rounded silhouettes. Patty and Maybelline are amazingly optimistic and friendly. CALM for their breed with gentle demeanour belies the fact that behind those trusting eyes and wagging tails, their previous life has not been optimum. Since arriving at UCHS (from another rescue) they are well on their way to being housebroken; are good to walk on lead even in tandem. Kind, gentle children are accepted with trust and there appears no animosity to other dogs. Cats, however, will not be tolerated! They have their basic commands, and are MEDIUM energy and relaxed on interaction. Each have received a clean bill of health from the vet with the added plus that through the Trooper's Fund dental surgery and cleaning were also provided and a new owner would save the expense and enjoy fresh breath and that "Colgate" smile! Patty and Maybelline are bonded friends who really enjoy each other so we hope that this charming twosome can find a home together. I held your hand and prayed that you saw me by your side in the last beats of your heart. "Please MOM NO!! We never got to say goodbye, you were gone before we knew it, to the castle in the sky. God, why did You take her so soon, I know You must have made a mistake that day! I think of you everyday, trying to make sense of why God took you. I keep hoping that you will come around the corner with that beautiful smile. I catch myself dialling your number to ask for advise or just to talk "Oh Hi Honey" you use to answer. I miss your red lips after you drank wine, I miss how innocent you could be, but also how loud and embarrassing you were. I miss the birthday cakes you baked with love, the gravy that only grandma could make. I miss the smile on your face when you were throwing the ball to your grandkids. If I could have only one wish, I would wish for just 5 minutes to tell you how much you mean to me and to tell you that you were a great mother. I know you sent the hummingbirds, but it still does not take away the empty place in the soul of our family, you were the heart!
