Shields attempts lake crossing Teen's death under investigation Georgetown's lady of the lake is at it again. Colleen Shields, who successfully swam across Lake Ontario twice in six previous attempts, was attempting another crossing yesterday (Wednesday). The local swimmer entered the water at Niagara-on-the-Lake Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. and of press time late yesterday afternoon was still going strong. Based on her past efforts she was expected to complete the swim sometime between midnight and 2 a.m. Thursday. At 60, Shields will be the oldest person to have crossed the lake if she is successful. She told The Independent & Free Press earlier that turning 60 last September was her main reason for attempting another crossing. "Hopefully I can show women my age that age is just a number-- dream big-- it does not define who you are," said Shields. She swam across the lake six years ago in 16 hours and 30 minutes, and would like to achieve that time again. She also made the 53 km crossing in 1990 in 17 hours and 56 minutes. Both times she earned the distinction of being the oldest woman at that time to swim across Lake Ontario. The Halton Regional Police's Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the death of an 18-yearold male pedestrian that occurred in Ashgrove last Thursday evening. Shortly before 9 p.m., the teen was crossing 10 Sideroad between Trafalgar Rd. and the Eighth Line when he was struck near his home by an eastbound Audi driven by a 28-year-old man from Horning's Mills, Ont. and not a 39-year-old Georgetown male as was stated in the initial HRPS press release. At the request of the family, the victim's name will not be released. Sergeant Paul Davies of the reconstruction unit said Wednesday that a mechanical inspection of the Audi found no evidence of anything faulty with the vehicle. The driver has been fully co-operative and at this point no charges will be laid. A post-mortem examination took place last Friday and results from toxicology tests won't be known for several weeks. Investigators are also in the process of acquiring the deceased's cell phone records to see if he may have been distracted at the time of the accident. 9 ·The IFP· Halton Hills, Thursday, September 6, 2012 TENT SALE st th th 21 al September 6 to 9 4 DAYS ONLY!
