166th edition opens Friday Georgetown Fall Fair `chickens out' this year By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer This year's theme for the 166th Georgetown Fall Fair is the chicken, although organizers aren't exactly winging it when it comes to putting the main attractions in place. Many of the events and shows that have been popular amongst fair-goers for decades are back on the itinerary and the only minor concern at this point is a long-range weather forecast of 40 per cent chance of showers on Saturday. Close to 100 volunteers are required to run the various aspects of the fair that will go on, rain or shine. "We have a formula that seems to work well and there's no need to change that very much," said fair president Lee Martin. "We're thankful to our many sponsors and volunteers that make this happen, as well as the Georgetown Agricultural Society for putting their support behind this event." Martin noted that for the first time in about a dozen years, a refreshment tent will be on site as Nashville North has stepped forward to oversee its operation. Live entertainment on the weekend includes a Battle of the Bands on Stage B on Friday night starting at 7:30 p.m. At noon Saturday, Daring Derek the Comedy Magician performs on Stage A while at 4 p.m. the Sandy Stompers Band is set to play. The TruLee Odd Show, The Ben Show and Tim Holland The Puppet Trainer will also appear at various times during the weekend. One of the highlights of the fair, the demolition derby, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday. Magical Midways is back for a second year to operate the midway rides and games of chance through the weekend. There will be some special midway pricing-- Toonie Friday and Family Celebration 2-for-1 Sunday. The Agricultural Awareness Tent will give fair-goers the chance to learn about farming and see many farm animals. Entries for the Homecraft competitions closed yesterday (Wednesday). Admission to the fair is $15 for a weekend pass, Adults: $5 Friday and Sunday, and $8 Saturday. Children: 7 to 12 get in for $3, under age 6 get in free.
