th ei fp .c a Th e IF P -H al to n H ill s | T hu rs da y, D ec em be r 7, 20 17 | 20 Wicked Truth, a band hailing from Acton, recent- ly appeared on the CBC show Land and Sea. The band appeared in a recent episode focusing on Lee and Laura Keough, the couple whose family was behind the annual Lobster- fest in Acton for the past 20 years. Wicked Truth has played the Lobsterfest for the past two years and are no strang- ers in Acton. "Wayne Unruh (bass player) and his wife Bonnie are close friends and former neighbours of Lee and Lau- ra," said singer Matthew Bunt. "Wicked Truth had played the Lobsterfest the previous year in 2016 and we were happy to return for the big final block party." The 2017 edition, which took place Father's Day weekend, was the last Lob- sterfest to be hosted by the Keoughs, who moved back to their home province of Newfoundland and Labra- dor shortly after the event. The two-part episode fo- cused on Lobsterfest, while the second followed the Ke- oughs back to Newfound- land after living in Ontario for 30 years. "As far as being on Land and Sea, it was really great. They asked us to pick a song to play for the show and I suggested In The Mood by RUSH, because of the Cana- dian content of the show; and it's a song/band not of- ten tackled by bar bands. Which is what we set out to do from the start," said Bunt. "It's not every day I get to do what I love on national television. It's pretty surre- al. It's weird because the taping happened five months ago. We knew this was coming, but I didn't re- ally think about it until it aired and I got a text from my friend saying her mom just called her "wigging out" because she saw me on TV. "Now, I'm realizing that this 30 seconds of cross- Canada air time is probably one of the coolest experienc- es of my life, will only help the success of WT, and it wouldn't have happened if I had not bought Wayne that birthday beer," added Bunt. According to Bunt, Wicked Truth formed after a chance meeting between he and Unruh two years ago at a local pub in Acton. "Back in December 2015, I was at The Red Harp in Ac- ton and Wayne was there celebrating his birthday with his family. I didn't know him, but I bought him a birthday beer. I knew Wayne played bass in anoth- er local band and asked him if he was interested in start- ing a new project. He said: 'Funny you should ask that,'" said Bunt. "He and some friends had been trying to get their band off the ground for about a year, but couldn't find the right singer. I audi- tioned in Jan 2016 and Wick- ed Truth was born," he add- ed. The band's membership has evolved since the show was taped back in June, but Bunt says as long as he and Unruh are in the mix, Wick- ed Truth will remain an on- going concern. "Shortly after the Lob- sterfest, the band's lineup went through some major changes with some mem- bers deciding they didn't want to play so frequently and others wanting to play more. They decided to de- part, but Wayne and I - the driving force behind the band - remained. "Now, with a new lineup we are busier than ever and excited about pushing our success to the limit." The band is currently booking shows into 2018 and will be playing at The Red Harp Pub's annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Night on Dec. 23.
