Call for a free estimate: 905-494-1915 After 35 years serving on Halton Hills council, Mayor Rick Bonnette says he might not seek another term in next year's election. During his address at the annual Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce Mayor's Luncheon on Tues- day (Dec. 12), Bonnette an- nounced he had not decid- ed whether he was going to run again in the 2018 mu- nicipal elections. He also did not rule out the possibility either, tell- ing those in attendance he would make his decision by spring. On Monday night, dur- ing its regular meeting, council surprised Bonnette with a cake in celebration of his 35 years of service on council. A lifelong resident of Halton Hills, he was first elected to council at the age of 27. He maintained that role until being elected mayor in 2003. He is cur- rently serving his fourth term in the mayor's chair. In 2008, Bonnette was honoured by the province with the Long-Standing Service Award. He was also a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubi- lee Medal in 2012 for his many years of service. The 2018 municipal elec- tion is scheduled for Oct. 22 of next year. NEWS Mayor Rick Bonnette might not seek re-election GRAEME FRISQUE gfrisque@metroland.com Mayor Rick Bonnette spoke at the annual Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce Mayor's Luncheon on Tuesday (Dec. 12), where he announced he has not yet decided if he will seek re-election in 2018. Graeme Frisque/Metroland Media A recent spike in the number of incidents involv- ing thefts from vehicles has prompted Halton Regional Police to remind Acton resi- dents to keep their vehicles locked when unattended. Statistics show that the bulk of the thefts are occur- ring during overnight hours. Plaza parking lots and other shopping areas have been targeted by thieves, who are looking for vehi- cles with holiday gifts in- side. Items visible from the outside such as laptops, cellphones, purses, wallets, credit cards or loose cash are also vulnerable to theft, said Staff Sgt. Paul Davies. "Our uniformed officers and Criminal Investigation Bureau Detectives contin- ue to tackle the issue and several arrests have been made in connection with these thefts," he said. Davies noted that rural areas are being victimized as well and suggests that exterior lights be kept on overnight as a deterrent from nighttime thieves.
