A local man facing sev- eral charges stemming from a dump truck crash in Georgetown in October was arrested in Oakville for impaired driving last week. On Sunday (Dec. 17) at approximately 4 p.m., wit- nesses reported a suspect- ed impaired driver near the intersection of John and Kerr streets Sunday in downtown Oakville. Keith Furlong, 40, of Georgetown was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle. Furlong was also charged with 10 Highway Traffic Act offences, in- cluding failing to remain and failing to report an ac- cident, on Oct. 21 after a loaded dump truck bar- reled through a busy downtown Georgetown in- tersection. Nobody was injured in the incident, which oc- curred just after noon at Maple Avenue and Main Street South. The dump truck was travelling eastbound on Maple when the driver lost control, police said, and left the roadway, hitting several trees before enter- ing a ravine on the south- east corner of the intersec- tion at the entrance to Ce- darvale Park. A background investi- gation revealed that the driver was subject to ar- rest warrants in New- foundland in 2004 and a more recent warrant is- sued in September in Mil- ton for assault, assault with a weapon, weapons dangerous and uttering threats. POLICE AND FIRE Man charged in October dump truck crash arrested Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott, has issued an invitation to Ontario Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca to visit Halton Hills. Arnott said he has attempted fol- low up with Del Duca several times since a private members' resolution he tabled passed unanimously at Queen's Park. Arnott's resolution called for the government to partner with the town and Halton Region to help ad- dress a number of transportation is- sues facing Halton Hills. "On Sept. 28, the Ontario legisla- ture unanimously passed our reso- lution, calling upon the minister to partner with the Town of Halton Hills to develop a long-term trans- portation strategy for the town, in- cluding a review of the need for a Highway 7 Acton bypass, taking into account the need for improved safe- ty, efficiency, and economic devel- opment opportunities," said Arnott after raising the issue a second time in the legislature at the end of No- vember. Arnott said those calls have fall- en on deaf ears since his resolution was adopted three months ago. "We've been following up with the minister repeatedly ever since the House passed our resolution," said Arnott in a release sent Thursday, Dec. 14. "I have extended an invitation to the minister in the hope that he would come to our riding, and for- mally announce his support for a partnership with the Town of Hal- ton Hills to develop a long-term transportation strategy for the town," he added. The most recent olive branch, said Arnott, was a written invitation he personally handed to Del Duca on the last day the legislature was sitting at Queen's Park before the Christmas break. "The minister needs to find the funds to be a full-funding partner in our study process. I hope he's taking the appropriate steps, and will visit our riding to announce his support sometime in the new year," he said. A request for comment from the Ministry of Transportation was not answered.
