The exhibition exam- ines the challenges women artists faced in getting their work exhibited and recognized, and the artistic inspiration they found in the domestic sphere. Included are paintings, drawings and prints by not- ed artists Doris McCarthy, Paraskeva Clark, Pru- dence Heward and Lilias Torrance Newton, gener- ously lent from private col- lections, along with a sig- nificant family collection of work by Montreal artist Florence Bryson McMas- ter. The image representing the exhibit is McMaster's unfinished portrait of a stylish woman. A family collection in Guelph of Mc- Master's work was the starting point for the exhi- bition - she had studied art in Montreal during the 1930s where there was a re- ceptive environment for women artists. The gallery then looked at bringing in the work of women who were her teachers, prede- cessors and her contempo- raries. From there, the ex- hibition took shape to focus on an era of great change and progress for women artists and women in gen- eral. The exhibition will be on view until Jan. 28, 2018.
