Yup, after 13 years working from this location, we will be moving over to the other side of Georgetown Market Place, to the most westerly side of the building, where Walmart was previ- ously located. August 15 is our last day here in the east end of the mall. This will be the third time I've moved with the offi ce. I started on Main Street in the mid-1980s before we moved to Armstrong Avenue in 1990, then to our present location in 2000. Moving is a foreign thing for me. In my life, I've never moved my place of residence. Okay, I've had different bedrooms in the farmhouse, and even lived in a mobile home on the farm for a short time-- but my address has never changed. If it weren't for The Inde- pendent & Free Press chang- ing locations over the years, I'd never have experienced the 'joy' of moving. I've talked to people who have moved several times. Most say moving is a good thing, 'cuz you dispose of lots of junk when you move. It's easier to toss it than move it. Wow, I really struggle with that con- cept. Actually throw stuff out? Man, that's a tough call for me. I see stuff that has accumulated at my desk over the years and really won- der how I can toss it. Geez, I have the original boxes that my current Nikon D2X camera and lenses arrived in-- you know, the really nice gold and black boxes, complete with the packing material. How can I toss them? They're a work of art, and Nikon art at that! I had to toss my several years of 'Faces of Farming' calendars, putting me into withdrawal for two days. My collection of back issues of The Sideroads of Halton Hills magazines has survived, in spite of the fact I'm not really sure where I'm going to store them in the new location. And my collection of birthday cards, notes of congratulations and hate mail are all trash now. Some I'll miss; others not. Numerous mugs and promotion glasses are now only a memory, and I just tossed out a billion business cards from the past 13 years. I've spent hours archiving thou- sands of images that accumulate over the years. I've always copied them to DVDs, but now I'm caught up to the present, just in case we have a glitch with the computers before they are moved to the new location, losing all those images which I consid- er the history of the newspa- per-- and the community. For me, it's a daunting task, to sort what should be saved and what should be tossed. Being a natural-born pack rat makes the job that much more diffi cult for me. At home, The Sidekick is continually on my case for keeping 'stuff' in the house/ barn/shed-- you name it. But it's good 'stuff'! I'm reminded of the Lovin' Spoonful lyrics-- 'Did you ever have to make up your mind? Pick up on one to leave the other be- hind?' That's me-- tryin' to 'pick up on one to leave the other behind...' My co-workers and I have spent the past weeks pack- ing up our 'personal stuff' in cardboard boxes, taping them shut and putting our names on them, so the movers will know which desk to drop them on when they arrive at the new offi ce. I'm sure it will all go well, but man, I'm a worrier. Change is like torture to me. I like things to just run along like a well-oiled machine, not be changed, and in doing so, abruptly yank me out of my comfort zone. Now it hasn't been all bad-- I was delighted to fi nd the neat little battery tester that I lost when we moved to this location. I wondered where it'd been hiding all those years. And that's encouraging for me. Before I'm fi nished, I just might fi nd that cool little key ring/fl ashlight/laser pointer that I received at a new busi- ness opening some 15 or so years ago.
