Professional Arts Building 99 Sinclair Ave., Suite 210, Georgetown 905-873-6642 Serving the community of Halton Hills and surrounding areas since 1992 LEARNING NEW STRATEGIES The Georgetown A diminished social life is one of the most difficult aspects of age related hearing loss. Many people avoid drawing attention to their hearing loss by having fewer social contacts when it becomes difficult understanding what is being said. The result is an altered and lonely existence that family and friends may mistake for dementia. Learning new strategies to cope with hearing loss could go a long way to restoring confidence and improving communication. The Hearing Clinic recommends the following: Inform people of the hearing loss so they may modify their speech; eliminate background noise; watch the speaker carefully and sharpen natural lip-reading abilities; ask the speaker to repeat what was said if necessary, and above all else; have your hearing thoroughly tested and properly fit with one of today's modern hearing instruments. Contact The Hearing Clinic if you or someone you know needs assistance. Fraser and his wife Heather operate Wheelbarrow Orchard on 10 Sideroad, east of Hwy. 25. Their crop has been outstanding, which seems to be the norm in Halton Region, not to mention the GTA. "Last year, we were lucky-- we only lost about 60 per cent of our crop," said Brad. "We knew of some (orchard owners) who lost 80 per cent of their crop-- which was the provincial average." But Fraser is more then pleased with the yield of apples he's seeing. "Last year, we had one row of trees that gave us three bushels (of apples) from the entire row," said Brad. "This year, that same row has yielded about 100 bush- els-- that's quite a difference." The great apple crop is not limited to the Frasers' operation. Kelly Ciceran, general manager of the Ontario Apple Growers, said it's a province-wide good news story. "Comparing last year's crop with this year is like comparing night and day," said Ciceran. "We have an amazing crop of beauti- ful apples across the province and our growers are very excit- ed about this year's apple crop. We've had good growing condi- tions which are reflected in the taste of the apples." With their five acres of or- chard, the Frasers' pick your own orchard has been open since La- bour Day weekend, and it's ex- pected they will be offering pick- your-own apples to customers until Thanksgiving weekend. Last year the crop was 'picked out' by September 15.
