Get connected at www.haltonsmallbusiness.ca Local dentist Corey Grossman is fight- ing off 'scary' tooth decay by offering mon- ey to trick-or-treaters in exchange for their Halloween candy. Kids can bring their unopened candy in to Grossman's Still Waters Dental Group office at 374 Guelph St. during office hours (3-6 p.m.) tomorrow (Friday). He will trade $1 for every pound of candy received. They will also get toothbrushes, dental floss and dental-care packages in exchange for the sweets. An electronic weigh scale has been put in place in the dental office to help process the donations. Grossman said the goal of the candy swap is to promote good oral health in the com- munity and he is looking for- ward to the response, which has been positive so far from at least one segment of the population. "We had a mom who is a patient in here yesterday (Wednesday) who thought it was a great idea, but her son's jaw hit the floor when he thought about giving up some of his candy," Gross- man laughed. A graduate of the University of Manitoba's dental school in 1997, Grossman has traveled to the Bolivian jungle and the northernmost reaches of Nunavut Territory to provide dental care for children. He said he got the idea for the candy am- nesty from a colleague in Mississauga who had seen similar swaps in the U.S., in which the collected treats were sent to members of the military stationed overseas. "He tried doing the same thing with the Canadian military and ran into some administrative tie-ups, so we've decided to just keep it local and-- depending on how much we get -- bring it into the (George- town) Bread Basket with a cheque." Grossman says there is nothing wrong with indulging in some candy, as long as it's backed up with proper brushing and flossing.
