Georgetown residents are encouraged to fill the paper grocery bag included in today's edition of The Independent & Free Press with non-perishable food items and leave it on their doorstep for pickup by 8 a.m. Scouts and guides will be picking up food in Georgetown, Glen Williams and Stewarttown. They will also be accepting monetary donations, but for those who require receipts, they are asked to include their name and address in an envelope with the donation so a receipt can be mailed. Items most needed by the food bank, which currently serves more than 375 resi- dents, are canned juice, hot/cold cereal, baby food, canned stew, canned meat, sug- ar, instant coffee, Sugar Twin, canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned soup, pasta sauce, Sidekick meals, cookies and crack- ers. Terri Mosher, Bread Basket chair, said last year they had to throw out more than 400 lbs. of expired food collected during the drive, so they ask that residents check the dates on the items. Mosher said volunteers are needed to help unpack, sort and pack food at George- town Alliance Church beginning about 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Lunch will be served. Last year 22,000 lbs. came in with $1,200 in cash. Mosher said last year, however, sev- eral late donations came in through the do- nation boxes in the grocery stores bringing the final total to roughly $775. Anyone who is missed during the drive can drop their donation off in the bins at any local grocery store, including Walmart,. At Metro, a canopy will be set up from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday for food donations. Scouts and Guides will be knocking on doors November 2, as the 23rd annual Scout Food Drive will be gathering up food for the Georgetown food bank.
