The Georgetown District High School graduate is the 11th Mount Allison student in past 13 years to receive the award and one of 83 recipients worldwide in 2013 to earn it. "I've had it on my mind as early as middle school when I had teachers encourage me to pursue it, but it's a very competitive process and some- thing you could never expect to happen," said de Chastelain, who learned she had received the scholarship over the weekend. "I am honoured and very thankful for all the people who supported me to help me get here." Four years ago, when making a decision about whether to attend the University of Toronto or Mount Allison, de Chastelain chose the latter school in large part for its tightly-knit community of 2,500 students as an ideal learning environment. "We are very proud of Kylie, whose aca- demic and extracurricular activities and achievements are exceptional," says Mount Allison University President and Vice-Chan- cellor Dr. Robert Campbell. de Chastelain will graduate this spring with an honours degree in Canadian studies and sociology, with plans to travel during the summer. She has focused largely on Aboriginal studies during her time at Mount Allison and plans to continue her studies in poli- tics and governance at Oxford. A career in law, with political as- pirations, are things she'd like to pursue upon finishing her stud- ies at Oxford. "I am excited by what Oxford has to offer and look forward to studying in an international setting," added de Chastelain, whose mother Debbie was born in England and is a vice-principal in the Halton District School Board. de Chastelain received research grants for various projects over the past two sum- mers at Mount Allison. In 2013, she trav- elled to the Northwest Territories, where she participated in a field school, living with a community of Dene elders. "It was a wonderful experience. I was able to observe and participate in many as- pects of traditional Northern life-- storytell- By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer KYLIE DE CHASTELAIN See STUDENT, pg. 12
