The five performances, which began on Tuesday, were to feature Canadian- born bass baritone John Relyea who is now too ill to attend. In spite of all the pleas to contact the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) immediately, Braun raced from Toron- to's airport to his hometown of George- town where he sang in the Christmas concert of St. John's United Church. "I couldn't suddenly not do that," says Braun, whose wife Caroline Maule is the church's music director. Then he was up first thing to take his children to school and buy some gloves at Ca- nadian Tire. Although concerts and programs are scheduled years in advance, there are always last-minute emergencies and changes. Heading to Roy Thomson Hall for a Tuesday rehearsal, Braun said he knows the Messiah very well and was actually thinking earlier that this was an unusual year for him, without a Messiah performance in his calendar. "It comes every year," he says. "I am happy to have the chance." When asked if he was suffering from jet lag after returning from his two-week trip to London where he was recording, Braun replied, "That'll probably happen at the concert."
