Johnston was born and raised on Mani- toulin Island, where his father owned a farm with more forest than arable land. Up to 50 gal- lons of maple syrup were pro- duced in a single season. Johnston and his siblings col- lected the maple sap in hand- hewn wooden buckets, and loaded them onto horse drawn sleighs. They raced home from school to collect the sap, and often argued over who had the best producing tree. After years they learned which trees were the most productive. Often Johnston tended to the fi re for the evaporator, and once he inadvertently let the evaporator boil dry. Although he expected the worst from his father, he was surprised that his Dad took it in stride.
