Public is invited to be part of injury prevention project Through my involvement with the Halton Hills Accessibility Advi- sory Committee, I became a liaison member of what is now Safe Com- munities Halton Hills, formerly the North Halton Injury Prevention Committee. It seemed a natural fi t because injury in Canada leads to more than 60,000 permanent dis- abilities with 5,000 people becoming totaly disabled. We already expect our aging population to add to these distressing numbers. Here are some more: • More than 3,000,000 visits to emer- gency-- one visit every 10 seconds. • More than 200,000 hospital stays-- 22 people every hour. • More than 12,000 deaths-- one person every hour; seven people an hour permanently disabled, one to- tally every two hours. Any efforts we make to reduce in- jury is welcome. On April 24, Barry King, retired Chief of Police at Brockville and The Provincial Lead Parachute--Canadi- an Safe Communities, addressed a gathering including the mayor, two councillors and 35 community stake- holders. King outlined the processes our community is undertaking to be designated a Safe Community and the benefi ts of designation. The Leadership Table now com- prises representatives from the Town of Halton Hills, Halton Police, Hal- ton Hills Fire Department, EMS and Public Health. Other partners include senior organizations, GDHS and CtK student organizations, Halton Hills Public Library, Minis- tries of Transport and Labour, The YMCA, Cogeco TV, BIA and The Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce and independent business owners, to name a few. This is a great start. We encourage more members from the community to join our Leadership Table to help prioritize issues. We want to include members of our service clubs, agri- cultural societies, church groups, media, business, not for profi ts orga- nizations, equestrian groups, parents and individuals that share our goals. The next meeting is on June 5.
