It started with the rollout of the 2015 Corvette Z06, the most powerful Corvette ever produced for the street. Chevrolet says the Z06 is a true supercar with perfor- mance similar to Ferrari and Lamborghini. Wearing "Corvette Rac- ing Yellow" paint, the Z06 looks meaner than the current Stingray with new spidery black alloy wheels and carbon fibre front splitter. It is powered by a super- charged 6.2-litre "small block" V8 producing more than 625 hp and 635 lb/ft of torque. It comes with a choice of a seven-speed manual or eight- speed automatic transmis- sion. The automatic's control- ler can make adjustments to the shift patterns up to 160 times a second. Full throttle upshifts, for example, can be made eight-hundredths of a second quicker than those of the dual-clutch transmission offered in the Porsche 911. The tires are huge and are 1.5 inches wider at the front than standard Stingray, while the rear tires are two inches wider. To cover the greater tire tread, the fenders of the Z06 were extended by 2.2 inches (56 mm) at the front, and 3.15 inches (80 mm) at the rear hence the more menacing look. The standard Z06 features a front splitter, spats around the front wheel openings, a unique carbon-fibre hood with a larger vent, and the rear spoiler from the Corvette Stingray's Z51 Performance Package. There is an optional carbon- fibre aero package - in either black or a visible carbon-fibre finish that adds a carbon-fibre front splitter with aviation- style winglets, carbon-fibre rocker panels and a larger rear spoiler with a fixed vertical tab on the edges that significantly increases downforce. The ZO6 is expected to be available about this time next year. Earlier on Media Day, Chev- rolet learned that the 2014 Corvette Stingray had been named North American Car of the Year while the Silverado pickup was named Truck of the Year. Detroit also saw the debut of the Cadillac ATS Coupe, the brand's first entry into the compact luxury coupe seg- ment.
