He has always had a soft spot for veterans-- his grandfather fought in the First World War-- and since 2000, he has written and shot The Indepen- dent's annual Remembrance Day sec- tion. His weekly column, A Ted Bit, has been a mainstay of the newspaper since 1991. It often features slices from his life, but in it he also tackles issues of the day. "I'm very fortunate. I have always had free rein and had lots of column fodder around me," he said. His home life and his four daughters figured prominently in the 1980s/90s, and his wife Alison (a.k.a. The Side- kick) is a regular these days. Brown plans to continue writing his column in Sideroads of Halton Hills four times a year and he says, "being a guest columnist in the newspaper is not out of the realm of possibility." He will also be blogging at www.me- andthesidekick.blogspot.com. IFP General Manager Steve Fore- man says Brown will be missed at the newspaper. "At last year's Chamber Business Achievement Awards, many of the re- cipients commented that they knew this was a "big deal" when Ted from the newspaper called to inform them of their selection and to plan a time for their photo shoot," said Foreman. "It was then that I remembered that the hundreds of events I had attended, that Ted was covering, I never heard "Brown" at all. This may be because our business leaders, politicians and our readers think of Ted as their friend, or a family member telling their sto- ries of our community in his column and through his photos. I'm sorry I took Ted for granted. I'll miss that ad- vantage and opportunity we had with him as part of our newspaper family." When Brown started in the news- paper business he left farming behind, but now he's going back to it. "I'm going home to continue what I started," says Brown, referring to his sheep farm. "I will be able to put more heart and soul into it." He might also do some consulting work, and there's also that bucket list. "I'm not going home to sit on my ass and do nothing. That's not who Ted Brown is. I'm going home to do some things that I want to do." Brown to focus on sheep farming The Paul Murr Golf Tournament committee recently presented Acton Branch of the Ca- nadian Cancer Society with a cheque for $48,000 from their golf tournament in May. On hand to accept the cheque were (front, from left) Shirley Dyc and Pat Kentner of the Canadian Cancer Society, John McNabb and Allan Hall of Paul Murr committee. In back, Cathy Gerrow (Canadian Cancer Society), George McPhail, Tim Ware, Ron Heller, Luke Vandermeer and Bev Mattocks of Paul Murr. Missing from Paul Murr Committee were Jon Hurst, Wade Vickery, Susan Rauwerda, Fred Reinders and Bill Manes. This donation brings the committee's 29-year total to $971,000 donated to the Canadian Cancer Society. The group also donated $5,000 to Cancer Assistance Services of Halton Hills (CAShh). The 30th anniversary of the event will be held Monday May 12, 2014. Photo by Ted Brown Paul Murr Golf Tournament committee donates $48K
