NEW Starting april 3 The Association for Community The- atres-Central Ontario (ACT-CO) held its gala awards night last Saturday in Vaughan. More than 600 actors, directors, mem- bers of casts and crews came to recognize their very best at the prestigious ACT-CO Gala -- the Academy Awards for commu- nity theatres. Of the 50 productions, not only did Georgetown bring home the Theas (the ACT-CO version of the Oscars) but they reaped many nominations as well. In the Musical Category Globe's All Shook Up won Best Production (Lori Girvan, Producer) for outstanding consistency across the board in all areas of production and performance. Also nominated were Craig Marshall (Direc- tor), Keith Baker (Lighting Design), Mary Udell (Costume Design), Erica Harvey (Mu- sical Director) and Jen Marshall (Choreog- rapher). In the Comedy Category Georgetown Lit- tle Theatre's Going Postal received 11 nomi- nations and four Theas. When presenting Best Director, the adjudicator remarked that "the direction of a piece like Going Postal is a daunting and monumental task. The work is almost Wagnerian in its proportions. Direc- tor Pamela Niesiobedzki-Curtis provided us with a unified, coherent fantasy world known as Discworld. The choices she made in bring- ing this world to life were strong and salient. From design to stage direction to music, the strong ruling idea she brought to the produc- tion was as unique as the work itself." Also winning Theas were Cat Heaven (Set Design), Carmen Braund (Adjudicator award) and Ro Palumbo-Coates (Stage Man- agement). Nominations were Gillian Tag- gart (Best Production), Mike Tadic and Ian O'Brien (Male Supporting Role), Ken Smith and Michelle Empson (Lighting Design), Sharon Vandenberg and Pamela Curtis (Cos- tume Design), Alex Kanarek and Gary McIl- ravey (Sound Design) and Steve Kirk (Male Lead). GLT's John Wallace (Male Lead) also received a nomination for Skin Flick. With such outstanding results, one has to wonder why anyone would go to Toronto to see a show when the very best, community theatre is right here in our own back yard, Congratulations to all the nominees and winners.
