Trustees approved funding of nearly $2 mil- lion for the hiring of 21 teachers and adminis- trators at Wednesday's board meeting. The new personnel is needed, say board staff, due to pupil enrolment growth and to supply support for the implementation of the board's Multi-Year Plan and its Board Im- provement Plans for Student Achievement. "Given the overall increase in HDSB stu- dent enrolments, enrolment growth in par- ticular schools, community engagement and increases in the number of students with spe- cial education and English language needs, an allocation increase should be considered prior to board approval of the annual budget...." stated part of the rationale in a board report on the need for increased staff funding. Senior board administrators convinced trustees to pass the funding request for the new hirings prior to the approval of the board's 2014-15 budget, which will happen later this spring. Among the new staff to be hired for next year includes 2.5 principal positions and 2.5 vice-principal positions at a cost of $600,925. Eight new elementary Special Education Resource Teachers (SERTS) were approved at a cost of $680,000. The board's staffing formu- la is one SERT for every 262 students.
