Volunteers bring a multitude of skills, expe- rience, knowledge and compas- sion to so many individuals and organizations in our Town. This year, National Volunteer Week was April 6-12 and is a time for all of us to pause and celebrate the energy and commitment of vol- unteers. I am very proud of our com- munity's caring, co-operative spirit. Much of what our Town has accom- plished is the result of the contributions of our local com- munity volunteers. In order to express our thanks and gratitude, the Town will be hosting a Volunteer Appre- ciation Celebration themed 'Thanks Alatte.' This cof- fee house inspired event will be held at the Gellert Community Centre the evening of Tuesday, June 10. All volunteers in Halton Hills will be extended an invita- tion later this month. They have won the Local Distribution Company Performance Excellence Award. This is one of the most pres- tigious awards an LCD can achieve. I have said many times our Halton Hills Hydro is one of the best locally owned electrical util- ities in the province. It is why I fought against any forced merg- ers or sales of our utility. **** What's up with Canada Post? First they announce phasing out door-to-door delivery, and then they announce a 35 cent increase in stamps. Phasing out door-to- door delivery will have financial consequences for the Town as well as a burden on se- niors, people with disabilities -- not to mention lost jobs. Council is in total opposition to this service cut. **** The Town of Hal- ton Hills also re- ceived a Platinum Youth Friends Des- ignation. This is a huge award for our Town. It acknowl- edges the great ef- fort of communities in ensuring their youth (13-19) have continu- ous access to diversity of 'play'. This designation reaffirms Town Councils commitment to sup- porting and engaging youth in our community. Congratulations to the Mayor's Youth Action Committee members and staff.
