"This was a simple request from the (school) community.... This is just a (name) revision so it didn't seem nec- essary to invoke a whole new (naming) process," added Strachan. She said there is precedent for her re- quest. "For the past several years, trust- ees have made decisions to name new schools honouring the requests of people who have had a school named in their honour, or having the school reflect their full names. Examples include James W. Hill, John William Boich and Anne J. MacArthur, to name a few," Strachan stated in her rationale in a written report to the board. Several trustees took an opposing viewpoint. "I hope this board does not get caught up in the future changing the names of schools.... A lot of schools could be re- named for various reasons," said Bate- man-Olmstead. "I knew Ethel.... Whether the school is named Gardiner or Ethel Gardiner is irrelevant as it will always be Ethel's school," Bower said. Bower added the school went through the board's naming policy process ini- tially and that she can't support a change right now. Strachan said the issue was discussed with school administration and the cur- rent Gardiner P.S. School Council and that there was support from both for the name change. That wasn't good enough for trustee Hlusko. ".... You consult the (broader) public not the school council," said Hlusko, noting she recalls the long, drawn-out debate that surrounded naming the school. "I would think it might not have passed (originally) if it was named Ethel Gardiner," she added. "We are long past the process," said Bateman-Olmstead. "It sets a precedent. It's a wide community that participates in such a process." Trustee Danielli expressed regret at how the naming process for the George- town school played out initially. "At the time I was incredibly disap- pointed we did not honour the woman," by using her first name. "She was the one who convinced me to become a trustee."
