The Alcohol- ics Anonymous fellowship will celebrate 80 years at its international con- vention next year in Atlanta. The Georgetown United Group of Alcoholics Anony- mous was founded on May 16, 1957 and holds a regular week- ly meeting at St. John's United Church, Friday nights at 8:30 p.m. In total there are 14 meet- ings of Alcoholics Anonymous in Georgetown every week. The best indication of the impact of this fellowship can be seen at an open AA meeting. Addiction recovery rates are sadly quite low everywhere. AA is not a "silver bullet", nor is it the only option for those seeking to recover from alcoholism. However for the people who have found the strength to live in sobriety by practis- ing the 12steps of the AA program - it is a gift that is often difficult to put into words. Unfortunately, misconceptions about the AA program can stand in the way of the suffering alcoholic reaching out for help. Often someone who could refer a sufferer to AA, may not because of lack information-- especially the local information-- about how and where the fellowship is active, what it is about, and what a newcomer can expect. It is a very special time of year to thank your mom for all she has done for you. So give her something very special to say thank you for everyday is a blessing. Having a mom is special as they teach us what life is all about. Today is the candlelight walk. We will walk from either St. Alban's church or the Hide House parking lot. We step off at 6:50 p.m. If you are going to march it is best to be there at 6:30 p.m. Candles cost $5 for adults and are free for children. We would like to see as many children as possible attend to show honour to our veterans who will be there. Branch elections are on Tuesday, May 13 at 8 p.m. We hope to see all of the members out to vote for your new executive. The dinner is at 6 p.m. sharp. Decoration Day is June 8 at Fairview Cemetery and the time to meet is 9 a.m. We hope to get as many members as possible to plant geraniums on our veterans' graves.
