Photo by Victoria Thoms Inspiring Halton Hills youth honoured for their achievements The Town of Halton Hills celebrated International Youth Week, May 1-7, with a variety of events including a Games Night, free swims, bowling night, movie night and Coffee House. The gala event for the week was the MYAC (Mayor's Youth Action Committee) Youth Awards and Art Compe- tition Ceremony held at the Georgetown library on Tues- day night (May 6). The Youth Awards are given to individuals that are in- volved in the community in a capacity that benefi ts their peers and others as well as recognizing youth for their commitment to their education, the environment, the per- forming arts, sports, the community and their inspiration. The awards winners are being recognized for pro- moting a positive image of young people and generating awareness of the value and the contributions youth can make. On the back page, read about the interna- tional impact our young citizens are making. Maggie Connolly Award winner Travis Greene The Maggie Connolly award is in memory of an amazing public health nurse that made a positive im- pact to the Halton Hills community. Travis Greene is the recipient of the Maggie Connolly award. He is a member of the Christ the King mentorship program where he is not only exceptional in this role but he goes above and beyond the tasks asked of him. He is truly a leader among leaders and had taken on a huge undertaking by dedicating his time to work with younger students to aid in their transition to high school. Travis is one of the most genuine stu- dents, he cares and is concerned for others and his unwavering morals make him an individual that ex- emplifi es what it means to be a positive role model and a defi nite leader. Sustainability Award winners Cindy Dziuba and Michelle Borgal Recipients of this award demonstrate a passion for sustainability to improve the community and quality of life in Halton Hills. In addition, they have developed or participated in sustainable initiatives. These two recipients of our sustainability award have been involved in projects such as school Green Clubs, Conservation Youth Corps, waste manage- ment awareness campaigns, Bio Diversity confer- ences and community clean ups. In addition to their dedication to sustainable initiatives in Halton Hills they both volunteer in their schools and their com- munity. Continued on pg. 2
