The 18-year-old Georgetown native has been one of many cogs in an impressive Storm jug- gernaut that clinched the franchise's first On- tario Hockey League championship title since 2004 last week with a five-game series victory over the surprising North Bay Battalion. Dickinson, a first-round draft pick of the NHL's Dallas Stars last summer, has been over- whelmed by the local support he's received leading up to major junior hockey's pinnacle event, but tickets to the four-team tournament are hard to come by. "We've had a lot of requests from family and friends for tickets and you only get so many, so unfortunately a lot of people who want to be there will have to watch on TV," said Dickinson prior to leaving for London on Wednesday. The Storm will play its opening game Satur- day against the Western Hockey League-cham- pion Edmonton Oil Kings at 4 p.m. on Rogers Sportsnet TV. It's been a remarkable run for Guelph after claiming the OHL's regular-season title with a 108-point campaign followed by a 16-4 playoff record -- including convincing series victories over Cup host London and a powerful Erie Ot- ters' side. Dickinson has been among the league's top- 10 post-season performers with eight goals and 16 assists with a +20 plus/minus rating, after a career-best 26-goal, 52-assist total in the regu- lar schedule. With former NHLer Scott Walker behind the bench, the Storm broke a hex of being unable to get past the first round in a playoff series for six straight years. "My first year here, we almost didn't make the playoffs for the first time in a long time and things weren't good," said Dickinson, who completed four psychology courses at the Uni- versity of Guelph this year. "We've got a lot of confidence in ourselves right now, and we have 12 interchangeable for- wards who can play any role or style we need to. Our third line plays the power play and no- body really cares who scores the goals, as long as we win at the end of the day." The Knights, who have been to the past two Memorial Cups and lost in the final two years ago in overtime to host Shawinigan, start off the tournament Friday night against the Que- bec league winners, the Val d'Or Foreurs. With no grade 12s and just three Grade 11s in the lineup, the Rebels have still been able to steamroll through the competition so far, routing Jean Vanier 13-0 to hold on to first place with a 5-0 record. Pitchers Paige Mitchell and Haley Lambert combined for the shutout. Jesse Copeland (2), Matt Hodgins, John Vezina, Josh Oliver, Kyle Moore, Daryl Hanzelka, Jesse Oliver and James Vezina also tallied for the 'Dogs, who are 3-2 on the season. After losing their home opener to the Oakville Buzz 9-8 in OT last weekend, the Bulldogs visit Oakville Friday night and will play host to the 2-4 Mimico Mountaineers Sat- urday at 7:30 p.m. No small feat for Lavictoire Despite being one of the most diminuitive and young- est snowboard cross competi- tors in his age group this past winter, Georgetown's Justin Lavictoire came up big where it mattered on the podium with a string of excellent results. The 13-year-old won a few races this past season, earning him the overall points title for both the Ontario Snowboard Series and the Western New York Series, which qualified Lavictoire for both the Cana- dian and U.S. championships. At the USASA meet at Cop- per Mountain in Colorado, Lavictoire recorded the second- fastest clocking in time trials and easily took top spot in his first two heats before placing 13th out of 67 riders for the 14-and-under age group. The grade 8 Ecole Sacre Coeur student in Georgetown South was again one of the last left standing at the Canadian championships at Big White in Kelowna, B.C., making the final for the under-14 boys' division.
