The Sixth Annual Walk for ALS was a huge success, with the Saturday event topping its $165,000 goal by at least $5,000-- and donations are still coming in. It helped the volun- teer organization raise more than $1 million in its six years. This makes the Georgetown/ Acton Walk for ALS the most successful in Canada. "We had a beautiful day where over 1,000 walkers participated. The silent auction itself brought in over $10,000! Small town-big heart!" said one of the organiz- ers, Mary Jo Knox. The Town of Halton Hills, local frontline Halton Police offi cers from 11 Division (Georgetown) and the HQ based Commercial Motor Ve- hicle Enforcement Unit (CMVU) of Traffi c Services collaborated on the one-day enforcement blitz on com- mercial vehicles. Noble St. was closed off to be used as a truck inspection site. The results of this full Commer- cial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) inspection blitz was-- out of 15 trucks inspected: • 12 taken out of service to have defects repaired (80% failure rate) • 38 charges laid under the High- way Traffi c Act • 1 drug seizure (5 grams of mar- ijuana) • 1 oversize load stopped without a Halton Hills permit The results are indicative of a need to continue enforcement ini- tiatives in the remote corners of Halton Region and similar locales, a Halton Police press release stated.
