The Halton Hills Fire De- partment will once again be conducting a voluntary home inspection program beginning this week. The Home Safe Home Cour- tesy Fire Safety Inspection Pro- gram assists homeowners in making their home safer for their families by reducing the chance of fi re and other trage- dies. The program will run until October. Even with all the media, pre- vention and public education efforts by fi re departments in the province, including Hal- ton Hills, there continues to be residential properties where fi re safety issues are still present. The issues in the community include inoperable or missing smoke alarms, improper stor- age or accumulation of com- bustibles, and improperly con- structed two-unit homes. The program is a door-to- door inspection campaign con- ducted by fi refi ghters that is completely free and voluntary for the homeowner. With the owner's permission, fi refi ghters will conduct an in- spection of their home using a checklist specifi cally focusing on items such as smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, heat- ing equipment, electrical, home escape planning and household hazards. Firefi ghters will also leave fi re safety literature for the homeowner. Should any issues be identifi ed, fi refi ghters will use this as an opportunity to educate the homeowner on cor- rective measures to alleviate the fi re safety issue. If during the inspection smoke alarms are found to be inoperative or require replace- ment, staff will install new batteries or, if necessary, new battery-operated smoke alarms as per the current Home Safe Home Program. Should there be a more serious fi re safety is- sue or the homeowner would like a follow-up; fi re prevention staff will contact the homeown- er. Chief Marshall adds, "Most of a family's free time is spent in their homes, a place that pro- vides them shelter and where adults and children should feel safe. The Home Safe Home Courtesy Fire Safety Inspection Program will improve fi re safety in their home".
