•Th e IF P• H al to n H ill s • Th ur sd ay , J ul y 10 , 2 01 4 6 OPINION For many years some residents of Halton Hills said that there are not a lot of activities in the community geared towards youth. There are some people who talk about doing some- thing and then there are people who roll up their sleeves and do something. Such is the case with a dedicated group of about 20 youths from the three local high schools who have organized this Saturday's Rock the Hills Music Festival at the Georgetown Fairgrounds. The teens have partnered with the Optimist Club of Halton Hills, Halton Hills Cul- tural Roundtable and the Town of Halton Hills. "It will be like nothing Halton Hills has ever seen before," said event co-lead John Muirhead, who's also a Christ the King student and mem- ber of local band Casual Disaster. Muirhead noted that the festival won't be like your aver- age small-town musical event-- with a line-up of juried local musical acts and headliner, Juno- nominated band, Hollerado. In addition to the music, a variety of activities have been planned for throughout the day, including hot air bal- loon rides, henna tattoos, an inflatable 'mega- slide,' vendor shopping opportunities and a mini Colour Me Rad-style race, where partici- pants are sprayed with colours as they run. "We're really trying to erase that stigma. This will be a professional show with staging, light- ing and sound," he said. Tickets cost $25 and are on sale now at www. rockthehills.ca. Anyone interested in signing up as an event day volunteer, sponsor or vendor can also contact the festival through the website. The festival will cost an estimated $60,000 to $70,000, which will be recouped through ticket sales, grants and sponsorships. So buy a ticket, enjoy good music, and sup- port our youth.
