"Seniors are an integral and key component of our membership base. However, our programming appeals and is applicable to an even wider de- mographic and we wanted our name to better reflect the range and intent of our programming," said John Lesko, President of the Georgetown centre. The change is in recognition of the ongoing growth and evolution the cen- tres have experienced. The program offering is diverse and reflects many different stages and abilities. "We believe this new name truly reflects the mandate of the centres. It will always serve seniors and offer programs that support their desire for active living. Active living was pur- posefully selected because the style of programming supports an active mind and body with a healthy dose of social interactions. "The make-up of our membership is diverse and spans many different ages, but the one thing we all have in common is that we want to be active, with each person determining what that means for them. This new name reflects who we are today and in the future. The emphasis is on helping our members' live active lives," added Dave Maloney, President Acton centre. Mayor Rick Bonnette also supports the name changes and believes it ac- curately reflects the important role the centre plays in the community. "The centres have been an integral part of our community for years and this new name reflects the diversity of program- ming being delivered and is much more inclusive." The name and new logo will begin to be featured in June with a full cel- ebration planned during the centre's open house week - September 8 to 12. Local seniors centres renamed to reflect activities Our thanks go out to Ruth Micha- siw for her years of service to the Travel Desk. Ruth has decided to pack it in and spend more time on her memoir writing. We also want to thank all the mem- bers who took the time to fill out the Membership Survey. It is your oppor- tunity to tell us how well we are doing and to make suggestions on how we may improve. We have heard what you said and we are working to implement some of these suggestions. At present we are looking to opening your Centre on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. We will require more volunteers. Our Lottery ticket sales are going well. With odds of 1 to 33 to win and only 500 tickets being sold you can't go wrong buying a $50 ticket. The Grand prize is $5,000. Drop by and see us at the Farm- ers' Market on Saturday, July 19. Movies will continue throughout the summer. Next movie will be on Fri- day, July 18. They will continue twice a month. The Travel Desk continues to be a busy place. We are offering Cabaret at the Shaw Festival Theatre, Steak BBQ Cruise and show in Orillia, Oktoberfest at the Concordia Club in Kitchener, Cross Border shopping to Buffalo, and Daniel O'Donnell's final show in North America for at least a year. You must come in and sign up well before the event. All drop-in programs continue throughout the summer. Open House Week is the week of Sep- tember 8th. Not really that far away. Stay tuned for some specials that week. I love this quote, "Life is not the way it is supposed to be. It's the way it is. The way we cope with it is what makes the difference."
