The 30th-annual tourna- ment raised more than $53,000 at this year's event in May to surpass the $1 million mark in funds raised for cancer re- search. "It's something we're proud of, but the people we have to thank the most are the people who come out to the tourna- ment and support us year after year," said committee member John McNabb. "It seems like the same group of people every year. It's the first big tournament for the spring and I think that it's popular because of when it takes place. Being in early May, you take your chances with the weather-- and we have had some cold and rainy days-- we've been pretty lucky for the most part," he said. See GOLF, pg. 3 Group named Acton Citizen of the Year By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer Halton Regional Police Re- construction Officers continue to investigate the fatal traffic collision that occurred at Tra- falgar Rd and Five Sideroad in the south end of Halton Hills on Monday, July 14. Next of kin have been lo- cated and identified but Hal- ton Regional Police will not be releasing the identity of the victims. Halton Police con- firmed that all four passengers of a Honda Civic were from Brampton. Halton Police Sgt. Chantal Corner said a male and female, believed to be in their 50s, were pronounced dead at the scene. According to Halton Police, around 6 p.m. Monday evening a dump truck collided with a Honda Civic at the intersection causing catastrophic damage to both vehicles. After the ini- tial collision, the dump truck struck a large light standard then veered off into a nearby cornfield. Its fuel tank rup- tured and the front of the truck became engulfed in flames. The Honda overturned and two of the four occupants were ejected. The driver of the Hon- da was extricated from the car then airlifted to Sunnybrook Hospital in critical condition. He has since been upgraded to serious but stable. A third passenger was transported by EMS to Milton District Hospi- tal with minor injuries, as was the dump truck driver. Due to the large area of spilled diesel fuel, the intersec- tion was closed until Tuesday morning. The Ministry of the Environment was on scene, supervising the excavation and removal of diesel-soaked soil from the farmer's field. There is no word yet on charges.
