Hot cars can harm them YOU & YOUR PET Hi there! I arrived at the Shelter as a "stray" and I was named "Fifi". I take comfort in the fact that it is often used as a short form of "Josephine" because "Fifi" conjures up a small, fluffy, white dog with a bow!....that's not me! Humans do amazingly weird things so let's put that behind us… They judged my ancestry to be a Norwegian Elkhound cross, and my age and gen- der as a three-year-old female, black and white, tipping the scales at 40 lbs. As I only speak "dog" I cannot tell them any- thing about my past except I have not had much training in manners and leashwork and they say I pull but are working with me. I am housebroken, have my basic commands, medium en- ergy, although when let out of my pod it looks like "high energy"! I haven't had very much to call my own in my life and I tend to guard my food and also my toys, but the Staff are giv- ing me reassurance that more of both will be coming so I don't have to do this any longer. My real problem is, that like humans in the first year of life you learn "trust or mis- trust"; if you do not learn trust in that window of opportunity humans or canines can de- velop trust issues. I am being encouraged to work on trusting people so you will have to be patient with me in this regard. I would like an experienced adult family (or children 12+) who will continue to work with me in a calm, gentle manner and who will make boundaries clear to me. To tell you the truth I really prefer relax- ing indoors to playing outside but when I do participate in play, I must admit I actually enjoy it as they say I should lose a couple of pounds or so. Recently, I really enjoyed spending quiet time with one of our senior walkers who just sat with me indoors for about 15 minutes until I relaxed to the point where I felt "safe" enough to lay down by her side. I hear whispers from the Staff that I fall into the category of having been "possibly abused" hence my fear of trusting humans right off the bat so to speak. If you are the right family for me you will enjoy helping me reach my potential and will have great pride, as will I, in our achieve- ments. Fifi tells her story in her quest for a family Story & Photo By JUDITH-ANNE KOLU Upper Credit Humane Society volunteer Button along with her two siblings, Thim- ble and Bobbin, were found as older kittens on Murdoch St. in Georgetown. Because they were caught as older kittens it has taken many months for them to relax in the vicinity of peo- ple. Now they trust their fos- ter family and are wonderful friendly cats. A new family will need patience to allow Button to settle in and they will be rewarded with a lov- ing companion. Button is a large black and white domestic short hair with a soft silky coat and striking yellow eyes. She has a gentle loving personal- ity just right for cuddling. When she is comfortable, Button is an af- fectionate content cat. She is the first to jump onto the bed for pats and will stay for as long as you want, cuddling and presenting all sides and her tummy for rubs. Her gentle manner makes her acceptable even to the dog who allows her to share the bed. Button loves run- ning water and last thing at night I find her sitting in the bathtub waiting for me to turn on the tap so she can have her trickle of wa- ter. She likes to play, although it is hard for her to get a turn sometimes as she is not as forward as the other cats. Button would en- joy a home with adults or a family with older children who understand how to be patient with a shy young cat. A new family with a friendly cat or dog would make it easier for Button to settle in. She gets along well with other pets and would be good company for an older cat or dog. Kittens and young cats will be available for adoption at Pet Valu 235 Guelph St., 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Juy 26.
