Town of Halton Hills marked the 25th anniversary of the Civic Centre's opening this week with the unsealing of artifacts and materials from a time capsule that was buried on the grounds of the Maple Ave. building. Current and former Town employ- ees were in attendance for the occa- sion, including Russ Miller, who was the Mayor of this municipality a quar- ter century ago on the day the facility opened, which attracted approximate- ly 600 curious onlookers. The contents of the 700-pound time capsule were on display throughout the building and included items such as design plans, newspapers and phone books. Slide shows also offered a re- flection of what some local landmarks looked like then. Mayor Rick Bonnette, who was a Councillor when the Civic Centre, re- marked that there was a lot of contro- versy at the time of the opening be- cause of its $6.1-million price tag, but with department offices based at dif- ferent locations throughout the Town, it was important to bring them all un- der one roof. Plans are in the works to compile items for another time capsule to be buried in the same location.
