Globe took possession of The Old Armoury, locat- ed just inside the George- town Fairgrounds in 2010, saving it from demolition. The building was built in 1866 and the roof was col- lapsing. Globe raised over $600,000, including $240,000 in grant money (Heritage Canada and Trillium) to re- habilitate this historic Georgetown building. During Open Doors Weekend, Sept. 27-28, Globe will unveil a plaque dedi- cated to soldiers of the First World War and display of historic artifacts from 1914-1918. An authentic First World War pattern military field kitchen will allow us to see how soldiers were fed in the field. An "18 Pounder" gun, the most com- mon artillery piece of that time, will be displayed and fired several times over the weekend (using blank fir- ing, black powder rounds). Globe members will pres- ent two short concerts featur- ing the songs of WW1. Acton's military collectible company, Collector's Source will display uniforms, various firearms in- cluding the Canadian Ross Rifle. Uni- forms, diaries, photos, medals and a collection of recruitment posters will be displayed. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day and admission is free. Come and enjoy history with the whole family and pay tribute to our local boys who volunteered in 1914. Detailed schedule at www.globeproductions.ca.
