Months after the bill was first introduced, the Reform Act was ad- opted 253-17 with the support of MPs from all parties. The Reform Act pro- poses to strengthen the role of MPs by giving them the tools they need to bet- ter represent their constituents. "Since introducing the Reform Act last December, I've received a great deal of input from colleagues, Canadians and, in particular, my constituents in Wellington County and Halton Hills," Chong said. "I strongly believe the Re- form Act is a product of that input and reflects the best of what the House of Commons can be: A place where the diverse views of Canadians are heard, and to the best extent possible, accom- modated in legislation. I'm thrilled to see the bill pass its first vote." Earlier this month, Chong proposed further amendments to address con- cerns raised during the summer by all three parties in the House of Commons. These proposed amendments provide parties flexibility in implementing the new rules, while maintaining the prin- ciples of the original bill. Chong has called on the committee studying the bill to adopt these amendments. The Reform Act will now proceed to the Procedure and House Affairs Com- mittee for review and amendment.
