The Regional Chair candidates answer: Why am I running? I am running to remain Halton Regional Chair because I want to keep Halton the best. In a recent survey 97% of Halton resi- dents were happy with the Region's services. Here are some of the reasons why Halton has such a high approval rating: For eight straight years under my leader- ship we have frozen the Regional portion of your property taxes. This is not only one of the best records in Ontario it is one of the best records in all of Canada. We have increased our roads budget from $50 million when I became chair to $289 million this year. By keeping taxes low and investing in infrastructure like our roads we have created the best job creation pro- gram in Canada. Halton's unemployment rate is one of the lowest in all of Canada. For more information see my website at www.garycarr.ca I am running because I can see the need for change at that level. I am against the complacency that seems to have set in, and I see a need for fresh insight and a vision for the future. I also see that the public voice is subdued by a lot of other apparently louder voices at the Regional Government. I believe Halton Region deserves the level of devoted and loyal advocacy on your behalf that I am so confidently offering to you. I stand for the prosperity of the constituents and balanc- ing that judiciously with our social responsibilities. I am for moderation and balance. I am for transparency and responsibility. I am for honesty and fairness. I stand for human rights and justice. I stand for an open market business friendly environment. I am devoted to improv- ing my constituents' quality of life, and preserving eco- logically sensitive and strategic areas while advocating for a balanced long-term approach to development. Gary Carr Syed Ali Naqvi I believe that every citizen should take the opportunity to serve the public in any capac- ity, striving to make a difference. If elect- ed, I would only serve a maximum of two terms, the most I believe politicians should serve."Professional" politicians are bad for the community, as some of them become complacent and develop a sense of entitle- ment. This may lead them to lobbying for changes that look good in the short term, but may not be right for future growth. I am currently serving as the President of NEORA, a local citizen association, and have previous- ly served as Vice President. I have participat- ed as a panel member on several think tanks on future growth of Oakville's town centre and North Oakville industrial lands use. I've lived in Georgetown for 12 years, and cur- rently reside in Oakville for the past 10 years. John Paulic Intensification is a provincial mandate that stipulates Halton will have to accom- modate hundreds of thousands of new residents without expanding city bor- ders. We need education and debate on this radical shift that will change Halton forever. Using intensification to focus on smarter development, transit, liveability and green communities could possibly bring great benefits. I don't see the type of planning and development needed to accommodate new residents without hurting the standard of living of existing residents.
