This 10th-annual initiative is an in- tegral part of Halton's Traffic Enforce- ment strategy and takes unsafe vehicles off the road as well as inspecting cargo and the corresponding administrative paperwork required to be carried by the drivers. Light commercial vehicles such as small panel trucks, cube vans and pick- up trucks with trailers were also part of this inspection. Over the two days, a total of 457 trucks were inspected. This could en- tail a quick 30-minute inspection or a thorough one hour inspection of the entire vehicle from front to back. Out of these inspected commercial motor vehicles the following results were achieved by law enforcement: • 188 were taken out of service; a 41% failure rate. • 22 drivers were taken out of ser- vice (for driving in excess of regulated hours, licence suspensions and im- proper training in Dangerous Goods transportation). • 36 sets of plates were removed. • 301 charges laid under provincial legislation (Highway Traffic Act, On- tario Regulations etc.). • 5 tobacco seizures and charges. • 3 federal drug arrests. Of special note, officers conducted nine Dangerous Goods inspections. Out of these inspections, six trucks were taken out of service (67%) and 13 charges were laid. Traffic issues are seriously addressed in Halton Region, stated Halton Police in a press release, adding "Enforce- ment campaigns such as this are es- sential to ensuring our roads and high- ways are safe for all users.
