Study? Practical train- ing? A voluntary social year or a year abroad? I'm Lea, an 18-year-old girl from Germany, and I have decided to spend a year abroad as an au pair after completing my A-Levels. I struck gold on the Internet and found a German agency, called AIFS, which sends travellers and au pairs not only to the countries men- tioned above, but also to Canada. Typically, au pairs take on a share of the family responsibilities but above all, the responsibility for shared childcare and light house- work duties. Canada is perfect for me! Your country offers so much. The most important and convincing points for me to travel to Canada were the two native languages. I had studied both English and French as an in- tensive course at school. Besides the wonderful diver- sity of language, Canada offers an amazing culture, attitude and land- scape. After my application was done, a potential host family mailed and videophoned me - to get ac- quainted. It didn't take alot of time to realize that we shared so many common interests to know that we would be a perfect fit with one an- other. Now I'm here living in Acton. Everything has come together so quickly! Now, I am feeling very lucky and overjoyed to be here, and part of a new family looking after two girls, ages 7 and 9. My key duty is to take complete care and responsibility for the girls. School has started after a long summer vacation. Some of my duties are to make them their breakfast in the morning, help with getting dressed for school, prepare their lunch bags and homework then bring them to the bus stop.
