Thanks to the severe weather experienced last winter the Town has already spent $1.7 million of its $1.8 million 2014 winter control budget. "It was a challenging January, February and March," said Chris Mills, the Town's Director of Infrastructure Services. He explained very cold temperatures in January made clearing roads and sidewalks difficult, and there was lots of snow through February. "Temperatures never warmed up. We had to do a lot more snow removal," said Mills. He said winter control spending could be $200,000 to $300,000 over budget this year and they may have to tap into the Winter Severe Weather Reserve. The expenditures do not even include any of the cleanup costs related to December's ice storm, which are being tallied separately and sent to the Province for possible reim- bursement. The Town's public works crews (there are 39 full-time staff and four additional season- al employees) are tasked with keeping the town's more than 900 km of road, 125 km of sidewalks and 22 municipal parking lots clear of snow and ice. Approximately 9,400 tonnes of sand and 1,800 tonnes of salt have been delivered to the Town works yard for the season and its fleet of snow plows (16 tandem axle, five single axle, five pickup truck plows and five sidewalk plows) are ready to go.
