During the three-week trip in July/August these passionate, young advocates were able to build a three-classroom school that can educate around 150 students. The group also built a composter to cre- ate soil for the school garden, a fence to make the school grounds more secure and secured donations to enable three more wells to be dug in the community. Bruder wrote about his experiences for The IFP. ****** As a 16-year-old, being a volunteer in Hilton Hills has opened up a world of new opportunities for me. My 11 years in Scouting have taught me the importance of doing a good turn and the difference it can make. This past summer, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Madagascar on a volunteer project with 14 other members from Scouts Canada. This proved to be a life-changing experience. While in Madagascar, Scouts Canada accomplished a great deal of work. Together, in just three weeks' time, the 15 of us built a school capable of educating more than 150 children, a water tower, a com- post system and a fence perimeter around the school area. The school is currently providing education to children in the community of Ambato Boeni where they are working to build their futures. The school will continue to provide education to children for generations to come, breaking barriers and opening new opportuni- ties. The water tower we built and compost system we created will enable the community to grow an abundance of crops, providing nourishment to the school kids and the entire community. We also installed a fence perimeter that provides security for the children during school hours. I embarked on this journey to begin making a difference in the world around me. So often we hear of the problems that exist in our world, yet often we ignore them and fail to take those first small steps to create an equitable world. I would like to thank the many individuals and companies from our community that generously sponsored my trip this past sum- mer. Their support has provided a life changing experience not only to the children of Ambato Boeni, Madagascar, but also to myself. Together, we proved that youth today have the power to provide a better future for the youth of tomorrow. Teen makes a difference in Madagascar Bradley Bruder with friend.
