Text about the Shepherd family says: "John Henry was brought to this area by his Mother in the 1850s escaping from slavery in the United States through the Underground Railroad. Their family was thought to be the first black settlers in the district. Henry Thomas was a distinguished military man who was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire and was a founding member of the Georgetown Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion." - Copyright Statement
