Working 11 miles out to sea in a small boat, artist Barbara Lucas said, "We have to capture the iceberg quickly. They move, melt, and collapse, or roll without warning, creating a strong suction that overwhelm the boat." Back in their studios, Lucas and Ruhland turned their sketches into large format oils on canvas, watercolours and coloured pencil drawings. They recaptured the white giants, in the surprisingly varied colours they saw from the boat: turquoise, lime green, mauve, emerald, even cobalt blue. Artists Barbara Lucas and Rainer Ruhland will be present at the Gallery on Saturday (Feb. 7), 1-4 p.m. Info: www.williamsmill.com Artist Barbara Lucas's Hidden Cave-- one of the many canvases on display at the new exhibit, Jewels of the Sea: The Majesty of Canada's Icebergs at Williams Mill.
