Today is Gerry and Dave Kentner's 50th wedding anniversary! Gerry and Dave were married the first time around at a simple ceremony at Knox Church in Georgetown, at 1:30 p.m. in the afternoon, followed by a reception at Dave's aunt Olive's home. As you read this story, mom and dad will be honouring this occasion by renewing their vows with their family at my home. Dave and Gerry's greatest joy (aside from their obvious love for each other) is their cherished time with their family. They could have jumped on a plane and spent their anniversary alone, but they would much rather share it with their family. They are over the moon excited that barring any major winter storms, all four grandchildren will be here-- not exactly children anymore, but all wonderful young men: Connor and Marcus Kentner; Alex and Michael Gysel. They're also anticipating the arrival of their younger daughter, Stephanie Kentner as well as Gerry's younger sister, Katherine and her husband Daryl, and also, Dave's original best man, who now calls North Carolina home, Bob Darby. Fingers crossed that the skies are clear and the roads are dry for all those coming. After the ceremony, we'll be serving after- noon tea-- Gerry's absolute favourite meal of all! There will be champagne, several rounds of savory hors d'oeuvre, lots of little crustless sandwiches, tiny mouthfuls of sweets, gallons of freshly brewed tea and fragrant coffee. All of course, served on delicate china, on crisp linens, polished silver and fresh flowers (Car- son and Mrs. Patmore-- if you watch Down- ton Abbey-- would be pleased). I've included a quick little recipe for cu- cumber sandwiches today, since it fits the theme. Happy Anniversary Dave and Gerry. Have fun and keep cooking to everyone else! Cucumber Sandwiches 1. Take two slices of square-sliced, white bread. Gently trim off all the crusts. 2. Spread a thin layer of spreadable cream cheese on one slice of bread. 3. Arrange super-thin slices of cu- cumber and a few springs of clean and dried fresh watercress on top of the cream cheese. 4. Spread a thin layer of cream cheese on the other slice of bread. Place on top. 5. Refrigerate, covered with a damp cloth until firm. 6. Carefully cut the sandwich into quar- ters, on the diagonal.
