But when the Greater Toronto Area West Transportation Corridor will be built, what it will cost and whether it will be a toll highway remains to be seen. "Anyway you look at it, it will be a long way before cars are on it," Halton Chair Gary Carr said during last week's Planning and Public Works meeting. Carr suggested there was a more imme- diate need for the Province to widen High- way 401 at Regional Road 25 and beyond to alleviate the growing traffic pressure on Re- gional and municipal roads. The two routes, presented to Halton's Planning and Public Works committee, are part of the 50 kilometre-long proposed 400 series highway to run from Highway 400 in the east to the Highway 401/407 interchange in the west. Both of the viable routes go through Halton Hills and Milton and cross the Credit River. "Costs will also be a factor" Neil Ahmed, consultant and project manager for the study group told committee members. He conceded they don't yet have a handle on what the total cost of the project will be or when it will be built other than it will be in the "billions of dollars." Carr said unless the highway is a toll highway, the project is "a long way from ever coming," because the province has indicated it doesn't have any money for new highway construction. "We don't have any commitment for funding or a timeline for construction," Nat- alie Rouskov, MTO project manager said.
