Hosted by the local Irish Dance school, The McGinley Academy, this competition will draw in world-champion-qualified dancers to com- pete for trophies, sashes and titles. Roisin McGinley, one of the instructors at the Academy and a former champion dancer with Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance, has been try- ing to run this type of competition for a few years. "We are very excited to announce the arrival of the newest competition to the ECR/Greater Toronto area: The Grace O'Malley Toronto City Championships. It is a different approach to the typical Irish Dance competition held in this area, as the Preliminary and Championship level will be held on the Saturday and Beginner Grades on the Sunday." The reason for hosting the competition at this time is that the most prestigious World Champi- onships of Irish Dance are being held on March 29 to April 5 in Montreal. Again, this is another first, Canada hosting this level of dance. With the help from her co-teachers, Clair (Mc- Ginley) Faloona and Lily (Wilson) Monaghan, the competition will run for two days, offering a chance for our Canadian dancers to perform in front of a distinguished panel of adjudicators be- fore they take the stage in Montreal. "We are delighted that our dancers heading to Montreal will receive feedback from these ad- judicators during the final preparations for the Worlds." The Grace O'Malley Toronto City Champion- ships first-place perpetual trophy features Grace O'Malley, who was a well-known historical figure in 16th century and is sometimes known as "The Sea Queen of Pirates."
