Okay, I know the Oscars were a month ago, but I haven't had time to tell you my sad story yet, so here we go. As I mentioned in the column that I was writing at the time, mom and I were all geared up for Oscar night, our tradition. Pyjamas were on, we had a fantastic spread of treats to eat: shrimp cocktails, hum- mus, veggies and dip, home-cured salmon, a bottle of nice wine. We were all ready to go. We watched a couple of hours of pre-show (for those of you out there that don't under- stand, just think Superbowl pre-show, except the speculation is over whose gown will have a malfunction and what shoes look best with which bags, rather than which football player will make the catch)! Then, the big moment, the show begins. We watched about an hour, and I got to see a few good things, but then the POWER WENT OUT!!! A moment of calm and quiet, then pan- ic set in. Mom went about the house finding candles and flashlights, I ran to the window to see if we were the only ones or if it was wide- spread. Everything was dark, except the house on the corner was fully lit up, I assume they must have a generator. "How well do you know those people…" I asked. "Not well enough to ask to borrow their TV," says mom. We waited for awhile, but when nothing ap- peared to be happening, I headed home. Mom sat up and waited, and was rewarded when the power came back on, with an hour or so of the show left. I was in bed by then, in a house with no cable TV, so there was no watching the rest of the show. I MISSED - Patricia Arquette's speech, Lady Gaga singing for the Sound of Music 50th anniversary, Julie Andrews speak- ing, Edie Redmayne's touching acceptance and to top it all off, my pick for best picture (Boyhood) did NOT win. The snacks were good-- but a disappoint- ing evening otherwise. Hard to believe that the broadcasters of the show didn't put a hold on the entire thing when they heard that George- town, Ontario was out of power ;) Have fun and keep cooking!
