Although mine had drive to all four wheels, it was amped up further by the F Sport Series 2 package ($6,500). More on that later. Still, the "entry" RC 350 AWD does provide a lot of content, as you'd expect for just under $55K. Inside, you get heated and cooled front seats with eight-way power adjust, dual-zone climate control, manual tilt/telescopic steer- ing (power adjust in RWD model), 10-speak- er audio, and driver aids like backup camera and blind spot warning with rear cross traffic alert. Navigation and other functions are dis- played on a seven-inch monitor and operated by the cutting-edge "remote-touch interface." This item, however, is a bit tricky, as you have to glide your finger along a touch-sensi- tive pad to navigate menus like climate or au- dio. Hover the cursor over your selection and there's an audible and tactile 'click.' Press the pad's midpoint to select. It may sound easy, but dragging your digit over a wobbly touchpad and hitting dead centre takes practice, and more often than not, I found myself looking at the screen. Fortunately there are still buttons for cli- mate and knobs for the audio system's vol- ume and tuning, although station presets still require the touchpad and a steady index finger. Tech aside, the cockpit has been well ex- ecuted, with instruments and controls com- Lexus packs a lot of content into the cabin fortably and attractively laid out, with every- thing easily accessed from its deeply bolstered bucket seats. The instrument cluster on my F Sport model, unlike lower trim, is fully digital (in- spired by the LFA supercar). Other interior perks include driver's seat memory, power adjust steering wheel, aluminum pedals and 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system. Overhead, the standard-equipped power moonroof brightened the mostly grey and charcoal interior, and helped reduce the slight feeling of claustrophobia in back. Both headroom and legroom here are lim- ited, especially with tall occupants up front - and there are no windows that open. Rear 60/40 seats drop to expand the RC's 295-litre trunk. But this coupe isn't so much about practi- cality as it is about poise - and performance. The 467-hp RC F may be getting a lot of atten- tion from enthusiasts, but the more attainable RC 350 still doesn't disappoint. Powertrains differ between the RWD and AWD models. Both get the company's proven 3.5-litre DOHC V6 that delivers 307 hp and 276 lb/ft of torque, but the former is mated to an eight-speed "sports program direct shift" transmission, while the latter receives a six- speed auto. Some enthusiasts have been griping about the AWD variant only getting six gears, but it wasn't long ago we were happy with five. And I hate using paddle shifters with eight. You can operate the paddles or bump the gear lever up and down the range while in Drive, but it's really in semi-automatic mode, as the transmission will shift for you at the ap- propriate time. Switch to Manual, and the on- board nanny won't kick in unless you hit the rev limiter. All this can be made better (or thriftier) with the RC's drive mode system. PRICE: RC 350 AWD (base) $54,600; F Sport Series 1 $57,750; F Sport Series 2 $61,100; Executive Package $61,800 Continued from page 1 Deeply bolstered front buckets come standard with heating and cooling, and NuLuxe upholstery. Premium leather is optional.
