Call Us! ENTERTAINMENT St. John's United Church to host Music in May concert series St. John's United Church is hosting its second annual "Inspiring Spaces" concert series on Saturday, May 2, at 7:30 p.m. and on Sundays, May 17 and 24 at 2:30 p.m. Artistic Director Carolyn Maule has created the dynamic "Music in May" program with established renowned artists and fresh young talent. On May 2, the St. John's Choir shares the stage with and mezzo-soprano Norine Burgess and pianist Carolyn Maule in a performance of choral and solo vocal repertoire. The choir will share a broad range of 20th century songs, from the contemplative Prayer of the Children to the rousing Music Down in My Soul. Praised for her bright, elegant and lambent-toned voice, Canadian mezzo-soprano Norine Bur- gess has performed in opera houses and with leading orchestras throughout North America and around the world. Burgess and pianist Maule will offer jewels from French, German, and English vocal repertoire, and a teasing taste of opera as well. On May 17, rising stars Tyler Brown, a pia- nist from Georgetown, and Orangeville's sing- er-songwriter/guitarist/pianist Juliette Pome- roy will perform a lively program of solo piano, Broadway and contemporary songs. Brown is completing his third year in Piano Performance at Wilfrid Laurier University. Pomeroy is an accomplished musical theatre lead, an honour roll scholarship high school student, the 2014 Orangeville and District Mu- sic Festival's "Most Promising Musician," and guest conductor of the Toronto Symphony. On May 24, Georgetown baritone Russell Braun and pianist Carolyn Maule join their dear friend, Toronto soprano Monica Whicher, in a program of French and English vocal rep- ertoire they call "Night and Day." Renowned for his luminous voice "capable of the most pow- erful explosions as well as the gentlest covered notes" (Toronto Star) baritone Braun rightfully claims his place on the concert, opera and re- cital stages of the world. Locally, Braun claims his place as a member of the St. John's Choir, and as husband of Carolyn Maule and father of their two ball-playing and musically tal- ented sons, Ben and Gabe. Style and musical elegance combined with an intuitive theatrical sense are the hallmarks of soprano Whicher's performances on the concert and opera stage. This concert is the year's must-see. For adults, tickets are $25 for each concert or $60 for the series; for students, the cost is $10 for each concert. Call the St. John's church office at 905-877-2531 or email office@stjohn- suc.ca. Tickets are also available at the door. CAROLYN MAULE AND RUSSELL BRAUN
