They seem like regular adults but look again and discover that the lunch supervi- sors of Halton Hills are extraordinary. Unlike the comic character Lunch Lady who uses Taco-vision Night Goggles or Hamburger Headphones, local "lunchies" (as some school administrators call them), are the real deal. On May 1, cel- ebrate School Lunch Hero Day. The day, initiated by the cre- ator of the Lunch Lady graphic novel series, Jarrett J. Kros- oczka, is a time when students can make creative projects and thank you cards for lunch staff. "Before a child can learn, their belly needs to be full and these women are working on the front lines to create an educated society," he says. "What they do is important." At his own lunch lady's funeral, he was stunned to find the artwork he had given her during a school visit as a published author on the casket. Her husband told him it had meant so much to her that someone had acknowledged her hard work and validated what she did. This inspired him to start a day where this feeling can be recreated in schools across the United States and beyond. "Coast to coast, all the lunch ladies have told me the same thing. Thank you for mak- ing a super hero in our likeness because the lunch lady has not been treated very kindly in popular culture." Krosoczka says that one lunch lady told him, "Before this day, I felt like I was at the end of the planet in this school. I didn't think anyone noticed me." There are about 600 lunch supervisors working at the 84 elementary schools in the Halton District School Board, according to Communications Manager Marnie Denton. Official numbers for the Halton Catholic District School Board were not available at press time but there are estimates of at least 315 lunch supervisors across the system's 45 elementary schools. The hourly pay rate starts at $11.34 with the public board and $13.81 with the Catholic board. Lunch supervisors typically work one hour per day. "They are lovely, dedicated people," Denton proclaims. One such person is Nancy Soukaris who looks after three grade one classrooms every lunch hour at St. Cath- erine of Alexandria in Georgetown. Since the children eat at their desks, she roams the hall going into each class every so often to make they are fine. The shift in- cludes yard duty. "I watch them as they play. If a child is alone I will approach them and encourage them to walk with me and talk to me until we find a game or group they can join," Soukaris, 33, says.
