POLICE BRIEFS Halton Police had issued a "hold and secure" to Georgetown South area schools for about 20 minutes Thursday morning due to a search in the area for a person in a vehicle that had been involved in a verbal altercation. Sgt. Chantal Corner said there was no threat to public safety. "The schools were notified due to an increased police presence in the area and we contact them to keep the kids inside the build- ing as a precaution," said Corner. At publication time police had no details on the outcome of the search and if an arrest was made. POLICE WARN OF SCAM Halton Police would like to in- form the public about the increase in immigration, hydro and Rev- enue Canada scams that are occur- ring. According to the Regional Fraud Unit, there has been an increase in calls in relation to immigration scams, hydro scams and Revenue Canada scam, all operating along the same line with payment de- manded in the form of prepaid credit cards. As an example, the caller claims to be from Citizenship and Immigration Canada. The call- er "spoofs" the telephone number and it appears they are calling from a legitimate government agency. The caller reports the victim's docu- ments are not in order and there is a financial penalty or arrest is im- minent. The caller remains on the line with the victim throughout the en- tire process, sometimes for several hours. The caller continues to demand payment in the form of preloaded credit cards. The victim is directed to purchase these cards and pro- vide the caller with the pin number located on the back. These funds can be accessed almost immedi- ately by the caller and will often demand more money, again in the form of the prepaid credit cards.
