On hand to collect the award in person on behalf of the com- mittee were founding member Jon Hurst and current event chair Allan Hall. Com- mittee members include Bev Mattocks, Susan Rauwerda, John McNabb, Wade Vickery, Ron Heller, George McPhail, Bill Manes, Tim Ware, Luke Vandermeer, and Fred Reinders. Only one award is given out each year across Canada. The award recognizes an independent or third-party group that has initiated or championed a fundrais- ing event in an innovative or unique way resulting in a significant financial con- tribution and, in the process, has devel- oped a sustainable event. The golf tournament originated in 1985 and was called The Acton Cancer Society Golf Tournament, to raise funds for the Acton Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society. Paul Murr, one of four founding committee members, was di- agnosed with cancer in 1988, and before his passing, the tournament was named in his honour. It has raised over $1 mil- lion for cancer research.
